This is the page devoted to Terra Mau itself.
Terra Mau is located in Southeast Alabama. We believe that cats do not belong in the outdoors! They prey on our songbirds, rabbits, squirrels, and other baby wildlife. We love cats, but have long preferred to keep them either in a dedicated shelter or in homes. We now believe that the current "catch, spay/neuter, release" programs are the answer to the predation of wildlife by cats, since it reduces the number of cats in the wild by keeping breeding to a minimum. We believe it is an effort which does nothing to address the problem unless owners of animals (both cats and dogs) are educated to SPAY OR NEUTER their pets. This helps the wild creatures, and keeps the slaughter of pets in the animal shelters to a minimum! The Good Kittizen program here at Terra Mau is a program which encourages pet owners to adopt an already neutered/spayed pet from a shelter. The GK designation on our adoptions page lets you know that the pet you adopt has had this life-saving surgery, and assures you of many healthy years with your pet. Currently, we have placed all surviving cats with either foster homes or forever homes, and are currently focusing on reptile rescues. A round of FelV and two other viruses have taken the lives of seven of our cats, and we are in an ongoing fight to eliminate these diseases so we can resume our rescue program. We are currently working with several trap/neuter/relase programs in the area.

Terra Mau
Here at Terra Mau, we assess new cats to determine health, suitability for socialization and adoption, and then raise the suitable ones in our home. We get them ready to be adopted by teaching them to use litter boxes, to be comfortable around other cats and dogs, and introduce them to kids. We screen all prospective adoptors, and they agree to spay/neuter the cat, keep it indoors for life, and never mutilate it by declawing it. The cats not suited for adoption are spayed or neutered and returned to the area they were found, and given care by a "gatekeeper", a person who monitors their health and gives them food assistance if necessary. Those with health problems or chronic diseases are kept in our shelter, cared for and vetted, fed and played with for life!

Cat of the Month-FORTY-SEVEN
Forty-Seven-Yep, he's named for the number that the Creator gave him at birth! We were gonna call him Marcus, after the NASCAR Driver of #47, but to us, he will be Forty-Seven forever. Here he is, having his version of a pit stop... His story is a rough one: I first saw him at our local Dollar General store. He had bright blue dye on his side that turned out to be disinfectant. Somehow, someone or something had gashed the little guy's side-clear down to the sack of his intestines! We took him home, then to a vet, and he is now a healthy one year old! In fact, while waiting to get him neutered, he accidentally got out, and is now the proud papa of two kittens by our DarkFur . He is still not yet fixed, mainly because he only has one of his testicles on the outside, and we have to save up for the slightly more expensive neutering operation he will need. He is a real sweetie, and brightens up our shelter by loving everyone who comes in the door! And an update! Two weeks ago, Forty-Seven joined the ranks of the Good Kittizens! The surgery went well, and he is now adjusting to his new status! REMEMBER TO SPAY/NEUTER all your precious pets!

Rescues Updates
Always there are more to rescue. And with the economic stiuation like it is, it has been devastating for thousands of people who have to give up their beloved pets because of foreclosures or reduced income, and for the thousands of pets who don't know why they are being put to sleep at overcrowded shelters. I cry myself to sleep some night just thinking of those poor, loved animals who are not able to find homes-or keep their families. Please help by donating time, money, or a foster home to help save as many as we can-PLEASE!!! ALWAYS adopt your pet from your local shelter, it frees up space for another one to be rescued from death! REMEMBER: UNTIL THERE ARE NONE, HELP AT LEAST ONE!
